Sweet Dreams

Sweet Dreams

Oil on board – 1999

47 x 62cm

As I lay me down to sleep
I pray the Lord my soul to keep
And if I die before I wake
I pray the Lord my soul to take

There are no prep sketches for this one as it was painted directly onto the board.
At the time I painted this I was living with everything I had feared and there was no light at the end of any tunnel – maybe a case of ‘better the devil you know’. My partner at the time was becoming more and more controlling and abusive, and I was on the opposite side of the planet to my family – but in a country I knew I belonged. It took a few years but I did leave (see ‘The Long Road Home’) and never looked back.
